Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive treatment for suitable varicose and spider veins. It involves carefully injecting a specialised solution into the affected vein, causing the vein to close and gradually fade as blood flow is naturally redirected through healthier veins. Depending on the size and location of the veins, treatment may include microsclerotherapy or ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy. A clinical assessment is required beforehand to determine suitability, discuss expected outcomes and potential risks, and develop an individual treatment plan.

During Treatment

Sclerotherapy involves carefully injecting a specialised solution into the affected vein. Depending on the size and location of your veins, microsclerotherapy or ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy may be used. Treatment is performed in the clinic and the number of treatment sessions required will vary between individuals.

After Treatment

You will receive personalised aftercare instructions following your procedure. Compression stockings may be recommended for a period after treatment, and your practitioner will advise you about returning to exercise and other activities.

Temporary effects such as bruising, redness, tenderness, swelling, itching or firmness along the treated vein can occur. Treated veins generally fade gradually rather than disappearing immediately, and some people may require more than one treatment session.

Are There Risks?

Like all medical procedures, sclerotherapy carries potential risks. These can include temporary skin pigmentation, inflammation, small visible blood vessels around the treatment area and, less commonly, ulceration, blood clots, allergic reactions or other complications.

Your practitioner will discuss the expected benefits, limitations, alternatives and potential risks specific to you before you decide whether to proceed.

Your Treatment Plan

Every patient and every vein pattern is different. Following your assessment, your practitioner will develop an individual treatment plan and discuss the recommended approach, anticipated number of sessions, expected recovery and costs before treatment begins.
