Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA) – Minimally Invasive Treatment for Varicose Veins
At Plaza Central Medical & Aesthetics, Dr David Pratt offers Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA), a modern, minimally invasive procedure designed to treat varicose veins and improve venous circulation.
EVLA uses targeted laser energy to close damaged veins that are no longer functioning effectively. Blood is naturally redirected through healthier veins, helping to relieve symptoms such as leg pain, heaviness, swelling and discomfort associated with varicose veins.
Performed under local anaesthesia, EVLA typically requires no surgical incisions or hospital admission. Most patients can return to their usual daily activities relatively quickly, although recovery times vary.
Conveniently located in Maroochydore on the Sunshine Coast, Plaza Central Medical & Aesthetics provides personalised assessment and treatment options for patients experiencing varicose veins and related symptoms.
Book a consultation to discuss your vein health and determine whether Endovenous Laser Ablation is a suitable treatment option for you.
What to expect during the laser procedure for varicose veins
Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA) is a minimally invasive procedure generally performed under local anaesthesia to help minimise discomfort.
Anaesthesia: A local anaesthetic is administered to numb the treatment area. In some cases, an additional nerve block may be performed in the mid-thigh to provide further pain relief.
Ultrasound Guidance: Your doctor uses ultrasound imaging to identify the affected vein and map its pathway through the leg.
Laser Fibre Insertion: A small puncture is made in the skin, allowing a thin laser fibre to be carefully inserted into the affected vein under ultrasound guidance.
Laser Treatment: Additional diluted local anaesthetic is administered around the vein to improve comfort and protect surrounding tissues. The laser is then activated and gradually withdrawn along the vein, delivering controlled heat to close the affected vein.
Completion and Dressing: Once treatment is complete, the laser fibre is removed and a small dressing is applied to the entry site. Stitches are generally not required. A compression stocking or bandage may also be applied to support recovery.
Following the procedure, patients are usually encouraged to walk and may return to many normal daily activities relatively quickly, depending on their individual circumstances and their doctor's recommendations.
How to Prepare for Your Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA) Procedure
Preparing for your EVLA procedure can help ensure a comfortable treatment experience and smooth recovery. At Plaza Central Medical & Aesthetics, your treating doctor will provide personalised instructions before your appointment.
Before your procedure:
Discuss your medications: Inform your doctor about all medications and supplements you take, particularly blood thinners. Do not stop any prescribed medication unless advised by your treating doctor.
Eat and drink normally: EVLA is generally performed under local anaesthesia, so fasting is usually not required. However, follow any specific instructions provided by your doctor.
Wear comfortable clothing: Choose loose-fitting clothing and comfortable shoes. Loose trousers or shorts are recommended to accommodate dressings or compression stockings after treatment.
Avoid applying lotions or creams: Keep your legs clean and avoid applying moisturisers, oils or creams to the treatment area on the day of your procedure.
Arrange transport: Depending on the anaesthesia or medications used, you may be advised to arrange for someone to drive you home.
Plan your recovery: Most patients can resume light daily activities relatively quickly. However, strenuous exercise, heavy lifting and prolonged inactivity may need to be avoided for a period recommended by your doctor.
Bring your compression stockings: If prescribed, bring your medical-grade compression stockings to your appointment. Your treating doctor will advise when and how long they should be worn.
On the Day of Your Procedure
Please arrive at your scheduled appointment time and allow sufficient time for preparation, treatment and post-procedure monitoring.
Your doctor will explain the procedure, discuss any potential risks and answer your questions before proceeding.
Important: These are general preparation guidelines. Always follow the specific instructions provided by your treating doctor, as individual requirements may vary.
After Your EVLA Procedure – Recovery and Aftercare
Following Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA), most patients can return home the same day and resume light daily activities relatively quickly.
What to Expect After Treatment:
Walking: Gentle walking is encouraged immediately after treatment to promote healthy circulation.
Compression Stockings: You may be advised to wear compression stockings for a specified period to support recovery.
Mild Discomfort: Some bruising, tenderness, tightness or mild swelling along the treated vein is normal and generally improves over time.
Daily Activities: Most patients can return to their usual routine within 1–2 days, although strenuous exercise and heavy lifting may need to be avoided temporarily.
Follow-Up: Your doctor may arrange a follow-up ultrasound to assess the treated vein and monitor recovery
When to Seek Medical Attention
Contact your treating doctor if you experience increasing pain, redness, swelling or signs of infection. Seek urgent medical attention for sudden shortness of breath, chest pain or significant new leg swelling.
At Plaza Central Medical & Aesthetics, we provide individualised aftercare instructions to support your recovery following EVLA treatment.
